Diana Catarino is one of the most prominent Portuguese saxophonists of her generation, known for her unique and distinctive style.

With a classical background, Diana has over 10 years of experience performing at weddings, private events, corporate functions, and luxury gatherings across Portugal, France, Italy, and Spain.
Throughout her career she has worked with prestigious brands such as Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini Wines, Calzedonia, BMW, Benefit Cosmetics, Boucheron and Azimut Yachts, among others, and has performed for the Portuguese Royal Family, state figures, footballers and Hollywood celebrities.

Renowned for her musical versatility, Diana effortlessly navigates various musical styles, avoiding labels and continuously exploring new avenues of artistic expression. She performs as a soloist, in duos, and as part of orchestras, bands, and collaborative projects, aiming to connect with audiences on an emotional level and expand the boundaries of creativity.
Born in Leiria (Portugal), Diana is the third generation of musicians and saxophonists in her family. She began her musical studies at the age of 3 at SAMP and chose the saxophone at the age of 8 under the guidance of Maestro Alberto Roque. She then joined the Sociedade Filarmónica Maceirense and continued her studies at the Orfeão de Leiria Music School, which culminated in a classical saxophone degree in 2009 and a Master’s degree in Saxophone (Music Teaching) in 2017 at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (ESML/IPL), both under the guidance of Prof. José Massarrão.

Internationally, she completed the DEM (Diplôme d’Études Musicales) in classical saxophone at the Conservatoire de Région de Musique et Danse de Lyon (France) under Prof. Jean-Denis Michat and studied jazz at the American School of Modern Music of Paris and composition at the Conservatoire de Boulogne-Billancourt under Prof. Jean-Luc Hervé.
Diana enriched her training by attending various lectures with Jean-Marie Londeix and Paul Harris as well as masterclasses and congresses with renowned saxophonists such as Otis Murphy, Michel Supera, Jérôme Laran, Hugo Gaito, Rita Nunes, João Figueiredo, Fernando Ramos, José Menezes, James Houlik, Henk van Twillert, Arno Bornkamp (Amsterdam Conservatory), Jean-Yves Fourmeau, Stéphane Laporte, Claude Delangle (CNSMDP), Alexandre Doisy, Richard Ducros, Christian Lauba, Eric Devallon, Mário Marzi, Antonio Felipe Belijar, Albert Juliá, Rick Margitza, Eduardo Fernandez and Mário Santos.
In addition to a sound academic background, Diana is an award-winning saxophonist and laureate in several competitions:

2003 – 1st Prize Ex-aequo in the ‘Best Students Competition 2002-2003’ (SAMP);
2004 – 2nd Prize in the Best Student Competition (EMOL);
2005 – 1st Prize with the saxophone duo in the Best Students Competition (EMOL);

2007 – 3rd Prize in the Vítor Santos International Saxophone Competition (FISP Palmela);
2008 – 3rd Prize in the Terras de La Salette International Competition (Oliveira de Azeméis).

In 2014, she was also awarded the Tribute of Merit by the parish of Maceira, in Leiria.

As a classical soloist she performed with the ESML Symphony Orchestra, playing A. Glazunov’s Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra, was a member of the Nova Orquestra de Lisboa and the Orquestra Marquês de Pombal and worked with the Orquestra Sinfónica Juvenil, Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra and Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras. Currently she is part of the Lusitanus Ensemble and the DiAma Duo with the pianist Amadeu Oliveira.

She collaborated with Portuguese and international composers, including the Sonata for Saxophone and Piano by Tiago Derriça, published by AVA Musical Editions, the Wandering and Cradle Song pieces and the soundtrack for the film ‘Là-bas la mer’ by the composer Phivos-Angelos Kollias.

As a speaker, she took part in TEDxYouth Leiria where she presented the talk ‘A laughing Saxophone’ and presented her research at EurSax’17 – 2nd European Saxophone Congress, in Porto.

She taught at various conservatories and music schools in Portugal and the UK and offers online lessons through an exclusive app that was developed for her students.

Among her innovative projects Smart Sax, a workshop dedicated to adult beginners, and MusicMoov – Maceira’s Music and Movement Stage stand out.

In a state of perpetual improvement and search for knowledge, she is currently a doctoral student in Music and Musicology at the University of Évora, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mário Marques.
